Wilyer Abreu off to solid start for WooSox
When the Red Sox had two middle infielders go down with injury, they turned to Worcester to fill the hole that was left. Yu Chang and Christian Arroyo both needed time on the IL, and Enmanuel Valdez has filled in nicely for the time being.
The other half of that trade that brought in Valdez is off to a nice start for the WooSox. Wilyer Abreu has been a pleasant addition to the lineup in Worcester after a brief stint on the IL out of Spring Training.
We have heard WooSox Manager Chad Tracy rave about his arm and plate discipline, but know we are seeing other elements of his game coming through.
Abreu has been a mainstay in the three and four spot in the WooSox lineup this year. The 23-year-old is carrying an .864 OPS in 32 games this season. In the month of May, Abreu is carrying a batting average of .300 and an OPS of .922. He has more hits, RBIs, and total bases than the previous month. The previous career highs of 19 home runs and 70 RBIs which were reached last year in AA, are currently in danger of being broken this season.
The Venezuelan native has played all three outfield positions this season. His arm profiles well for the corner outfield spots, and now we have seen him in center field nine games this season due to Jarren Duran and Greg Allen departing the team. So far this season, Abreu has committed zero errors in the outfield and has had two assists from right field.
Abreu should be an intriguing option for a late season call-up if injuries occur in Boston. Given the fact it will be the first full season in AAA this season, it would be more realistic to see Abreu as a legit option to crack the Opening Day roster once the 2024 season comes around.
