Will the Patriots seek a reunion with running back Sony Michel?
There’s a familiar face on the free agent market if the Patriots are seeking depth. Sony Michel who was cut by the Dolphins is now looking for a new home this upcoming season.
The 27-year-old Michel signed a one-year, $2.1 million with the Dolphins in May. He was competing with Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert for the starting job in Miami.
The former 2018 first-round pick was with the Rams last season and won a Super Bowl could provide depth in New England. The Patriots recently lost Ty Montgomery to an ankle injury and waived rookie Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor.
Michel would provide a ground and pound approach similar to Damien Harris. If Montgomery is going to miss significant time, Michel might not be the right fit.
The former Georgia Bulldog has 47 career receptions with 2 career receiving touchdowns. Last season with the Rams he caught a career high 21 passes with 128 yards receiving for the Rams.
Head coach Bill Belichick likes to surround himself with coaches and players he’s familiar with. Michel fits that prototype but signing a pass catching running back makes sense for the Patriots 53-man roster.
