Where's the bats?
The Red Sox offense has gone silent through the first four games of the season
The Red Sox rolled into Detroit coming off a big win over the Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball. However, the Red Sox left their bats in New York because the club only tallied four hits in a 3-1 loss to the Tigers.
The Red Sox offense was held at-bay by Tigers starter Matt Manning who retired the first 12 batters he faced. That was until Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez finally broke up Manning’s rhythm. Martinez belted a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning.
Rafael Devers was the only player in the Red Sox lineup who had multiple hits. Devers went 2-for-4 with a double, which came in the top of the ninth inning.
Through the first four games of the season, the Red Sox offense is hitting .173 which 28th in the league. The offense has only mustered 23 hits in 133 at-bats while striking out 36 times which is 22nd in the league. In addition, Boston is only hitting .107 with runners in scoring position.
Red Sox leadoff hitter Enrique Hernandez it 0-for-17 to start the season with one run scored. Jackie Bradley Jr. is 0-for-9 with one strikeout and Trevor Story is 1-for-8 with a double. Story has missed the last two games with an illness and could be out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game in Detroit.
The Red Sox have struggled mightily at the plate. Through four games this season, the lineup hasn't been able to get consistent at-bats at the plate. The lineup will eventually hit but when?
Red Sox manager isn’t worried about his club’s anemic offense.
“I mean, I’m surprised, but if this is what we’re talking about right now, we should be fine,” manager Alex Cora told reporters in Detroit, via NESN. “We pitched well, they scored three. I believe we’re going to score runs.”
Cora believes his lineup will score runs and they will. But until that happens, fans are wondering, where’s the bats?
