When could rehabbing Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas return? 'It's up to him'
Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas remains with the WooSox this weekend as he rehabs from the rib injury he sustained earlier this season.
While with Triple-A Worcester, Casas is 8-for-28 (.286 batting average) while slashing .375/.464/.893 with five doubles, four RBI, four runs, three walks, and nine strikeouts.
As Casas continues to get comfortable at the plate and in the field, how close is he to being ready to come off the 60-day injured list?
“Right now, it’s him. It’s up to him,” manager Alex Cora said Friday at Fenway Park. “He’s healthy. Like I said, he’s been taking grounders for a long time. I think the baseball part of it—the physical part of it—he’s ready to go. Now the timing of it.”
The WooSox game was postponed for Friday night, but Casas is expected to remain with the team through the weekend. Worcester will play a doubleheader on Saturday and conclude the series on Sunday afternoon.
“The ribs hurting a little bit, but I'm not (going to) have that stop me from going out there and giving my best effort,” Casas said to Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette this week from Syracuse. “Everybody in (the Worcester) clubhouse and up in Boston, they're going through something. So I'm (going to) keep pushing as much as I can, and I'll call it quits when the season ends, and hopefully it's in the playoffs with us winning the last game.”
Prior to landing on the injured list, the 24-year-old slugger batted .244/.344/.513/.857 with six homers, three doubles, 10 RBI, 12 runs, and 12 walks in 22 games.
“He will let us know,” Cora said. “He’s been hitting the ball hard. ... We knew it was going to take time. At one point, it’s going to end, so we’ll talk about him today. We’ll see how it goes over the weekend, and we’ll see where we are next week. But one thing for sure: he’ll be part of this, and we’re excited to get him back.”
