What's next for Chaim?
Bloom has decisions to make regarding extensions for Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers
The Boston Red Sox scored a huge free agent name late Sunday morning by signing former Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story. The 29-year-old signed a contract to play second base for the Sox that will lock him up for six years for $140 million dollars with an opt-out after four years. The Sox can also can pick up Story’s seventh year for $160 million. With Story being locked up for at least four years that leaves Chaim Bloom with decisions to make as far as extensions in the near future.
Bloom has made it clear he hopes to have serious extension talks with players while at camp before the April 7th Opening Day game against the Yankees in the Bronx. That leaves many paying very close attention to talks with Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers who is projected to make $11.2 million after the arbitration deadline Tuesday.
Bogaerts can opt-out of his contract at the end of this season, however has made it very clear he would love to stay in Boston for his career. Bogaerts has sat back and watched other shortstops sign major contracts which could mean he’s looking to get paid.
However, for Red Sox fans there’s no need to worry quite yet. Yes, we would love the two-time World Series champ to finish his career in Boston. But with Story being locked up until 2025, it seems his replacement could come in-house if an agreement is not made between the two.
It’s time to extend Rafael Devers
Now let’s move onto the next big move Red Sox fans are highly anticipating and quite honestly growing inpatient. That’s signing our young third baseman Devers and making sure he gets paid. Devers will become a free agent after the 2024 season but it would be reassuring for the fans to see him get paid now.
Both Devers and Bogaerts have made it clear they would love to play their career out in Boston. Red Sox Nation would love nothing more than to see the two hold down the left side of the infield for years to come. The two have been the young and exciting faces of the franchise for some time now and we would love nothing more than to continue seeing them. Bloom and the Red Sox will have lots of money to play with this offseason and will be able to clear the CBT this season if needed.
