Week 5 is a pivotal week for many fantasy teams, as bye weeks come into play. Fantasy owners figure out how strong their depth is to maintain success and avoid a loss. This will go through who to use as a fill in or not while looking at some key players who are off this week:
Key Quarterbacks on a bye: Deshaun Watson and Justin Herbert
Fill in- Sam Howell: Howell bounced back in Week 4 after a four interception game against the Buffalo Bills in his third game. Outside of the Bills game he has gotten 15 or more fantasy points to begin his career. This week he gets the Chicago Bears who ranks 31st in fantasy points against quarterbacks.
Avoid- Trevor Lawrence: Lawrence goes up against the previously mentioned Buffalo Bills defense. Partly due to their 31 point week against Howell they rank as the strongest defense against signal callers. Lawrence has only thrown for over 250 yards once this season and the Bills just held the Miami Dolphins in check.
Key Running Backs on a bye: Austin Ekler, Kenneth Walker, Rachaad White, and Jerome Ford
Fill in- Breece Hall: Hall has had a rough go to start the year. Many fantasy owners expected him to bounce back from his torn ACL, however his best week was in his first game when he got 147 total yards on 11 touches. Since then, he has not gotten 15 fantasy points combined. This next matchup is too tough to pass on though as he faces the very generous Chicago Bears who rank dead last in fantasy points against at the position.
Avoid- Rhomandre Stevenson: Stevenson has yet to be efficient for the New England Patriots. He hasn’t averaged more than 3.3 yards per carry in a game. While he still remains relevant in a PPR league, he has only gotten more than 10 yards through the air once. Facing a New Orleans Saints defense that has allowed only 3.6 yards to backs so far, this is another underwhelming matchup.
Key Wide Receivers on a bye: DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Keenan Allen, Mike Evans, Chirs Godwin, and Amari Cooper
Fill in- Adam Thielen: Thielen’s fantasy value is all about volume. He certainly should be rostered in all leagues at this point and even started. His last three weeks he has had 31 catches and at least 50 yards with 7 or more targets in each game. Bryce Young, like any rookie quarterback needs a security blanket, Thielin is his. The competition in Carolina for receptions is slim, leaving the volume to be very reliable.
Avoid- Jakobi Meyers: Meyers chemistry with Jimmy Garoppolo is real, but with Aiden O’Connell not so much. Meyers only had 2 catches on 4 targets last week with Garoppolo out with a concussion. He could very well return against the Green Bay Packers, but the Las Vegas Raiders do not play until Monday night which makes the situation cloudy. It is best to find another wideout to fill in.
