Watch Orlando Cabrera throw out first pitch at Polar Park
The WooSox held their first ever “Throwback Thursday,” which including an appearance by 2004 World Series champion Orlando Cabrera.
The former Red Sox shortstop was on hand for the pregame festivities and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Cabrera said a few words before the game, he thanked the fans and said, “Let’s get a win today.” Unfortunately, the WooSox weren’t able to follow through on the shortstop’s words, as they were defeated handedly 16-1.
The Colombian native threw out the first pitch to fellow countryman, Ronaldo Hernandez. Cabrera wound up his arm and let the throw loose, bouncing it off home plate.
Cabrera also spoke with Jorge Alfaro before the game, both were members of Team Columbia during the World Baseball Classic.
“The WBC, you’re representing your country. It’s more about, be proud, you have the last name on the back and that name on the front, you represent your country and your family, that’s big,” said Alfaro on his thoughts of the WBC.
Cabrera was acquired by the Red Sox during the 2004 season, he was involved in the historic three team trade that sent Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs. Boston also received then Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.
Cabrera was a big part of the Red Sox winning the 2004 World Series. Following the trade to Boston, former Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez gave advice to Cabrera on playing in Boston.
“Pedro Martinez gave me some good advice. He said, ‘Do the interviews but don’t ever read a paper here.’ So that’s what I did. I would be in the on-deck circle and fans would yell, ‘We love you Orlando. We don’t care what the papers say.’ I wondered what in the world the papers were saying, but I never looked,” said Cabrera.
