Veteran catcher Roberto Perez signs with the San Francisco Giants
The Red Sox had been linked to Perez this offseason
Veteran free agent catcher Roberto Perez will sign with the Giants, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Perez was linked to the Red Sox last week where it was reported that both sides were “in talks.”
The Giants and Red Sox were the two known suitors for Perez. Boston reportedly made an “made an aggressive bid,” per Cotillo. The Red Sox reportedly made their made offer a couple of days ago, per source.
The 34-year-old will join a Giants team that was looking for a veteran backstop to join Joey Bart. San Francisco has two other in-house candidates, Austin Wynns and Rule 5 Draft pick Blake Sabol to compete for the job.
For Boston, Perez would have joined a crowded room featuring Reese McGuire, Connor Wong and recently signed Jorge Alfaro. The Red Sox have been in the market for additional catching options to provide organizational depth this winter.
Injuries have plagued Perez the last couple of seasons. He has played in only 65 games since the start of the 2021 season. A fractured finger, shoulder issues, and hamstring surgery have all combined to limit Perez. A hamstring injury ending his stint with the Pirates after only 21 games last year.
