Tyler Uberstine is showing promise as a starter
Tyler Uberstine has a story that is impossible to not root for. After graduating from high school in southern California, Uberstine found himself without a college baseball scholarship offer. He then decided to enroll at University of Southern California and join the club baseball team. One year later during his sophomore year at USC, he decided to try out for the varsity team. He was able to practice with the team for a bit before getting cut before the season.
Following being cut from the team, Uberstine decided to transfer and try to latch on somewhere else to continue his baseball career. That next stop ended up being at Northwestern, where he only kept getting better. He saw his velocity grow into the low 90’s, which he had not touched 90 while at USC. He had a great year in 2020, which was shortened due to COVID. In 22 innings of work, he carried a 2.86 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP.
The numbers continued to be great after being drafted in the 19th round by the Red Sox in the 2021 MLB draft. After starting the 2022 season with the Salem Red Sox, Uberstine earned his promotion to Greenville mid-way through the year. With Greenville, Uberstine made seven starts and pitched 33 innings. He finished with an impressive 2.43 ERA and was able to put a respectable 9.45 K/9. The one area of improvement will be with limiting the walks, which he set a career high for in BB/9 in 2022. As it currently stands, Uberstine is projected to start the year back in Greenville and be a top starter for the Drive.
Uberstine can be defined as a real late bloomer. His arm doesn’t have the wear and tear from years and years of throwing since he had not played varsity in college until his junior year. The Red Sox will be keeping a close eye on Uberstine in 2023, as he might just be a diamond in the rough.
