Tyler Uberstine is a prospect on the rise in the Red Sox system
During the 2024 campaign, the Red Sox pitching prospects have gotten more attention than in years past. That is due to an intriguing core that includes Yordanny Mongero, Hunter Dobbins, Zach Penrod, and Richard Fitts. While those four have impressed, one player flying under the radar is Tyler Uberstine.
The former 19th-round pick was placed on the 60-day IL on March 20th and activated on August 23rd. While he has missed most of the season, he has started to make up for lost time. Uberstine has not allowed an earned run in two outings for the Greenville Drive and struck out four batters. He has also shown excellent control, not issuing a walk.
Although his sample size this season is small, Uberstine has had success regardless of the level. In 28 minor league games, the talented right-hander has posted a 3.51 ERA and struck out 113 batters. During the 2023 campaign, opponents hit .232 against him. Most of Uberstine’s work has been out of the rotation, and he is seemingly getting better at every level.
Due to his prolonged absence, the Red Sox will most likely be careful about how much the Northwestern product is used for the rest of the season. He has dominated high-A hitters, which should give Uberstine some momentum going into the 2025 campaign.
During his minor career, Uberstine has kept hitters off balance with his three-pitch mix. His arsenal includes a fastball that tops out at 94 miles per hour, a slider with swing-and-miss ability, and a changeup that reaches 88 miles per hour.
At the moment, Uberstine projects to be a depth arm, but that could change as he gets healthier. Over the last few weeks in Greenville, he has not shown any rust and has built on an encouraging 2023 campaign. If that continues, a promotion to Portland could be on the horizon next year as Uberstine continues to rise through the Red Sox system.
