Baseball is finally here as spring training games are officially being played all around Major League Baseball.
In Red Sox camp, there has been quite a bit of buzz in Fort Myers due to the additions of Alex Bregman, Walker Buehler, and Garrett Crochet. There also are sad reminders of just how fragile pitchers are with potential serious injuries to guys like Zach Penrod and Kutter Crawford. Those injuries don’t just stop at the major league level.
Minor league pitchers Matt Duffy and Cole Tolbert will be undergoing Tommy John surgery next week, sources tell Beyond the Monster.
Duffy, who the Red Sox drafted in the 4th round back in 2023, had an encouraging season pitching in Salem last season. The right-hander posted a 2.82 ERA over 98.2 innings in Low-A and was projected to start the 2025 season in High-A Greenville’s rotation.
Tolbert, an 18th round draft selection in the 2024 draft, debuted for Salem last season after being drafted and pitched 11.1 innings. The right-hander was projected to return to Salem and pitch out of the bullpen in 2025.
Both players will have the surgery on March 5th down in Arlington, Texas. If recovery goes to plan, a return to game action will be sometime in mid-2026.
Red Sox southpaw provides injury update; continues to rehab from Tommy John surgery
Red Sox left-hander Chris Murphy made his big league debut pitching out of the bullpen after he was promoted as a rookie in 2023.
Wishing them both well, a full & quick recovery as well as long careers afterward.
