Twins middle infielder maybe ‘available’ for trade; possible option for the Red Sox
The Red Sox are in the market for a right-handed hitting second baseman this winter. Boston has been casting a wide net in finding upgrades for the major league roster and the Twins’ Jorge Polanco could fill the void up the middle.
“Because of the arrival of Edouard Julien, the health of Royce Lewis coming up, he is someone that is available and people around the industry believe there’s a very strong chance that the Twins will, in fact, move Jorge Polanco this winter,” MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported Friday.
The Red Sox were the worst fielding team in the American League last season, committing 102 errors. Boston saw 59 errors come from infielders, which is a little more than half their total.
Polanco would be an upgrade defensively at second base. He owned a 97.6 fielding percentage out of 209 opportunities. The 30-year-old also offers versatility and can play all over the baseball diamond.
In addition to providing an upgrade defensively, he hit .255 with 14 homers, 18 doubles and 48 RBIs in 80 games. He also missed time throughout the season with injuries.
With the emergence of Lewis, who displayed his power and ability to provide a clutch hit in the postseason is making Polanco expendable this winter.
“Fortunately for us, we had a lot of good players that we felt really good about throughout the course of the season that played well for us through the years,” Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said at Major League Baseball’s GM meetings, as seen on MLB Network. “So we fully expect that guys (who) are established major league players, especially with our young players coming up behind them, that they’re going to be targets of other clubs.”
