For Triston Casas, the 2023 campaign has been full of ups and downs. The former top prospect has struggled at times defensively and spent most of the season batting under .200. However, over the last few weeks, Casas has started to turn his season around and put a slow start in the rearview mirror.
As the Red Sox offense has heated up, Casas has followed suit. The Florida native has posted a .280 batting average in his last 15 games and driven in seven runs. Casas has been an on-base machine and, entering play on Wednesday, has a six-game hitting streak. While the 23-year-old has impressed at the plate over the last two weeks, his numbers have steadily been on the rise since the calendar flipped to May.
After finishing April with a .137 batting average, Casas hit .257 in May. So far in June, he is hitting .273 and striking out less. He also has seven extra-base hits, which surpasses his total from the first two months of the season. That is the hitter the Red Sox need him to be if they are going to be successful.
One of the most encouraging signs for Casas is that his approach is starting to pay off. Dating back to April 13, he has the fourth-highest walk rate in the majors. Now that he is beginning to barrel up pitches, the first baseman has been hard to keep out of the lineup. So far this month, he has at least two hits in six games.
While Casas is only hitting .215 on the season, that shouldn't be the case for long. The former first-round pick is becoming more comfortable in the majors on a daily basis. As a result, his offensive metrics, including on-base percentage, have steadily increased since the start of April.
As the Red Sox look to continue their recent play, Casas will be a key piece. He is becoming a bat that can be relied on and showing why the organization holds him in high regard. If he can continue his recent success, the Red Sox will be in a good spot for the rest of the 2023 season and beyond.
