Triston Casas hits 3-run homer, lifts the Red Sox past the Orioles 7-3
Casas’ lone hit during the Orioles series lifted the Red Sox to a win. He continues to keep himself in the Rookie of the Year conversation.
The Red Sox salvaged a win over the Orioles in the series finale on Sunday from a rainy Fenway Park. Boston defeated the O’s 7-3, led by the bat of Triston Casas to avoid a series sweep.
Casas hit a three-run blast off Cole Irvin with his team trailing 4-3 in the sixth. His blast sailed 423 feet into the first row of the Green Monster.
The 23-year-old is one of the top candidates to win the American League Rookie of the Year award. Casas shared the field with Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson, who is one of the top players he is in competition for the award.
Casas went 1-for-12 during the three-game series with Baltimore this weekend. His only hit was the homer on Sunday. He walked twice and struck out five times.
The Sox young first baseman isn’t focused on individual awards.
“Rookie of the Year was never something that I set out to do,” said Casas said in an interview with Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe. “The only goal that I had this year was to play 150 games. I don’t think I’m going to reach that goal. That’s the only thing that I wanted to do. But I definitely think I have done well with the opportunity that I’ve been given.”
Henderson had a good series against the Sox, he went 5-for-15 with a homer and four RBI. The Orioles’ star owns an .810 OPS and a 119 wRC+.
“I don’t know who determines Rookie of the Year,” Casas admitted. “It’s not me and it’s not Gunnar or any player in this locker room or any coach. So to say that I’d want Rookie of the Year would just mean that I want the recognition and acknowledgement of a third party or anyone else. That’s not what I set out to do when I started playing baseball.
“I just want to play the game the right way. And however the chips fall if I ever win an award or if I don’t it’s not going to change like what I think about myself.”
Casas is hitting .264 with 109 hits, 20 doubles, two triples, 24 homers, 64 RBI and owns an .859 OPS.
