Trevor Story will shake up the Red Sox infield more than you may think
The Red Sox have undoubtedly struggled with injuries throughout the course of the season. Their middle infield has been one of the worst in baseball all season long. With Trevor Story set to return in the coming weeks, and Pablo Reyes ready to return, it is clear that some tough decisions are going to have to be made.Â
Let’s look at the current players on the Red Sox roster. Kiké Hernández is slashing .219/.278/.322 with six homers and 31 RBI. But worst of all, as many people know, he has atrocious defense at shortstop and second base, committing 15 errors.Â
Christian Arroyo is hitting .259/.290/.404. However, although his defense is solid, his OBP is very low for his average. Whenever he is at the dish, it seems like he’s swinging at everything and praying for contact. Defensively, Arroyo only has two errors in 377 innings at second base.Â
Story brings not only good range in the middle infield, but more power on the right side. Both of those factors have not been completely present in the season for the Red Sox. Story could make a huge impact for a streaky Red Sox team looking to make a mid-season playoff push.Â
Reyes has an interesting case. He is a young player with great defense and pop with the bat. Not to mention multiple years of control still under his belt. Many fans like Reyes, and it is going to be intriguing to see what the Red Sox do with him.
Like many instances this season, something has to give here. Some tough roster moves will need to be made. Neither Chang or Reyes have options, and neither do Arroyo or Hernández. It is safe to say all possibilities are on the table, and this roster will inevitably be different by mid-August.Â
