Trevor Story: 'To get out in the field and take ground balls and feel more like a baseball player is really good'
Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story has begun to field grounders at camp as he rehabs back from elbow surgery, per Ian Browne of MLB.com.
This was Story’s first on-field baseball activities since he underwent internal brace surgery in January to repair the UCL in his right elbow.
“It’s huge,” Story said on Friday. “You get to that point where you feel like just a rehabber. To get out in the field and take ground balls and feel more like a baseball player is really good, something I've been looking forward to. It's something small in the grand scheme of things, but in the progression it's big. It was a good day yesterday.”
The 30-year-old’s timetable to return to the club isn’t exactly set in stone. Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has been public on not putting a timetable on Story’s return.
“We’re not ready to put a timetable on [Story’s return] yet,” said Bloom back in January. “I certainly would not rule out a return sometime during 2023, but it’s also not something, at this stage, that we want to bank on.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora is feeling optimistic that Story will return at some point this season.
“It gives you hope,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “If he’s not thinking about [playing] this year, then why take ground balls so soon? He wants to be a baseball player, just like everybody else. He’s engaged and he’s excited. To take that step, it means a lot. That’s a good first step.”
