Trevor Story off to an impressive start at the plate
So far this season, fewer players have been better offensively for the Red Sox than Trevor Story. After being limited to 18 games last year due to injuries, the 32-year-old is on fire at the plate in his return to the lineup. Story has been a bright spot on a team that has dealt with inconsistency offensively.Â
In 69 at-bats this season, Story has posted a .304 batting average and driven in eight runs. He has also shown his power with five extra-base hits, including two home runs. While it is a small sample size, the former 45th overall pick is showing that he can still be a focal piece of the offense.Â
Story has not only made headlines with his bat but also been a threat on the base paths. He has already stolen six bases, which ties his total from last year. The veteran infielder only needs seven more steals to match his 2022 total, his first year in a Red Sox uniform.Â
As the Red Sox offense looks to find its footing, Story will need to build on his impressive start. He won’t have to be the main guy when the Red Sox bats are on fire. Rafael Devers, Alex Bregman, Jarren Duran, and even Triston Casas can hold that role. What the Red Sox need from Story is exactly what he’s been since opening day: a reliable veteran bat that can get on base.Â
With the regular season far from over, the Red Sox still have plenty of time to get on track. As long as Story can stay healthy, it also seems that a big bounce-back season could be in store. That is a welcome sign for the Red Sox, who are looking to end their postseason drought.Â
Even with talented prospects waiting in the wings, Story is making a statement early on that he has plenty of juice in his bat and can still be a very good player.
