Trevor Story is showing signs of life at the plate in June
For Trevor Story, the majority of the 2025 campaign has been full of frustration offensively. While he has played stellar defense, the veteran shortstop has undergone extensive cold stretches at the plate on a Red Sox team that has struggled to meet expectations. However, since the calendar flipped to June, he has been a different player.
So far this month, Story has posted a .343 batting average through 35 at-bats. In that stretch, the 32-year-old has shown some power with two home runs and two doubles. He has also thrived with men in scoring position, driving in 11 runs.
Although it is a small sample size, Story’s resurgence has been a welcome sign. His stellar play has come after a dreadful May in which he posted a .158 batting average and only drove in seven runs. During his worst month of the season, Story struggled to make contact, striking out 35 times.Â
With prized prospect Marcelo Mayer now in the majors, Story must build on his success at the plate. Alex Bregman is currently on the IL, but when he returns, the Red Sox will have a hard decision to make as Mayer’s reps at third will decrease. Assuming that Mayer has shown he does not need to return to the minors, the Red Sox will need to get creative to get his bat in the lineup which could mean cutting into Story’s playing time.
While that decision is still weeks away, Story has shown that there is still some life left in his bat. Entering play on Tuesday, he already has five multi-hit games this month. The key for Story has been making harder contact and cutting down on strikeouts.Â
June is far from over, but over the last week, Story has provided a reminder of how good he can be at the plate when he is locked in.Â
