The story behind the new Texas Rangers jersey
Texas Rangers reveal their new jerseys Monday morning
Early Monday morning the Texas Rangers released their Nike City Connect jerseys. This marks the 16th team with these alternate jerseys with four more expected later this season. The jerseys received tons of mixed emotions, however, here is more of a deep dive into their meaning of them.
The jerseys have a bit of a “gothic” type of font with a spur attached representing the DFW Spurs as the main logo with a cream jersey, darker blue/black pants, and blue hat.
On the jersey itself there is a quote that reads “Dream the Big Dream,” coming from former Arlington mayor Tom Vandergriff who was one of the biggest inspirations of the Rangers organization.
Vandergriff played a big role in connecting the two cities of Dallas and Fort Worth by helping found the DFW Spurs. One of the biggest goals that Vandergriff set out to accomplish was showing everyone the region would be capable of hosting a major league team.
These jerseys also pay respect to the Fort Worth Cats and Dallas Eagles by creating a sleeve patch. The Rangers and Nike combined the two to create a “Peagle” by giving the Cats logo of a panther a set of eagle wings.
The logo of “4-21” that will be shown on the hats has an important piece of history behind it. This date represents the date that Texas would win its independence after the Battle of San Jacinto. The date also represents the date of the first home game played in Arlington, Texas.
“I really like what we did with these jerseys… being able to pay homage to the history and dropping all these nuggets in them is nice,” said a Rangers representative to Beyond the Monster.
While some may not like the jerseys like many others they come together to tell a story and a piece of history. The Texas Rangers are expected to debut the jerseys on Saturday, April 22nd as they play host to the Oakland Athletics.
