On this episode of “The Pesky Report” Red Sox podcast, Derrik, Jake, and Hunter are joined by Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.
The trio talks to Chris about the SoxProspects new rankings, the 2024 season, and looking ahead to the 2025 season.
They ask about which prospects he missed and those he felt didn’t get a proper chance. What does he think of the adjustments made in the pitching development? Hatfield also gives an inside look at the website’s process when it comes to scouting and creating their top 60 rankings.
“The website started in the fall of 2003. And so we're at 21 years at this point; the closest I can think of are like comparables, right? Because it's always tougher,” said Hatfield on the evolution of the SoxProspects website.
“You look back in hindsight and it's like, oh, well, these guys panned out while these guys didn't, right? Like Henry Owens was a top prospect in a very healthy farm system and then didn't go on to do anything, right? Because that's just the nature of prospect them, right?
“We may look back and be like, I don't think we are, but we could be, oh yeah, that bust Kristian Campbell, right? Like I'm picking a random name out that has nothing to do with him. But in terms of how we feel about this group at the time, it's about as strong as I can remember.
“I mean, the system was particularly strong in, like, when did Raffy (Devers) debut? So that was like 17. So that like 16, 17 era when you had (Yoan) Moncada, (Andrew) Benintendi Anderson Espinoza for a hot minute, Raffy right before Dave Dombrowski got hired, perhaps not coincidentally, was a particularly healthy farm system.”
