Tanner Houck to pitch third game of the season
The Red Sox rotation to begin the season is becoming clearer by the day. Corey Kluber will take the ball on Opening Day against the Orioles, followed by lefty Chris Sale. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters on Wednesday night that Tanner Houck will start the third game of the season.
This announcement comes on the heels after a rough spring training start against the Twins.
Boston was pounded by Minnesota 11-0 at JetBlue Park, Houck gave up 10 hits, eight earned runs, with no walks and six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
“I sucked,” said Houck following his start.
The 26-year-old’s spring has been rocky, allowing 16 runs in 17 ⅓ innings (8.31 ERA) over five starts this spring. He has given up 22 hits (six homers) and 10 walks while striking out 21.
“Competitively, obviously I want to be better,” Houck said to reporters, including MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “I know I want to be better. I know I can be better. I know I can be a better pitcher than I’ve shown. And that’s where I hold myself accountable. And I’m frustrated with myself because I know I’m better. And I hold myself to a higher standard than that. So don’t put too much stock into it because it’s spring training. Come back five days from now. We’ve got Opening Day in (eight) days from now. That’s when stuff really starts to matter.”
