Tanner Houck named Red Sox's nominee for Roberto Clemente Award
On Friday, MLB teams announced their 2023 Roberto Clemente Award finalists. The award is given to a player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field. For the Red Sox, their representative is Tanner Houck.
Houck will be honored during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park on Friday, September 22, marking the 21st annual Roberto Clemente Day, which pays tribute to the 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer’s legacy. This is the first time in Houck’s career that he has been nominated for the award.
Since the Red Sox drafted Houck in 2017, he has wasted no time making a difference the community. In 2018, the St. Louis native created "Pitch for Adoption." The campaign raises money to place children between the ages of 6-18 who have experienced abuse or neglect in loving, caring, structured, and therapeutic homes and eventually obtain a permanent home. The campaign also supports two non-profits, Caritas Family Solutions and St. John Bosco Children's Center.
Houck's contributions don't stop there, as in 2023, he partnered with the Home for Little Wanderers, the nation's oldest U.S. child welfare agency. As part of the partnership, Houck welcomes children and staff from the Harrington House to Fenway each month.
The league-wide winner of the award will be selected by a panel that includes Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., representatives from MLB-affiliated networks (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN and TBS), MLB.com, as well as Roberto’s children, Enrique, Luis and Roberto Clemente, Jr.
