Stephen Scott ‘open-minded’ to playing different positions with WooSox
There once was a time where a couple of Red Sox prospects were called the “Meatball Gang”.
That is exactly what the duo of Stephen Scott and Joe Davis were called as they rose through the minor leagues together. They lived in a trailer together and due to their stocky frame, earned the nicknames of “Meatballs”.
Davis retired from professional baseball last year after reaching High-A Greenville. Scott has found his way to Triple-A this season after making a full-time switch to catching duties. His versatility has allowed him to crack the lineup at two different positions so far in Worcester.
“Just being open minded to it, that’s what I was talking to with Chad Tracy,” said Scott to Beyond the Monster about playing other positions. “Just coming in and being in the lineup as much as I can. Part of that is versatility so if it’s going to be first base then it will be first base. I have mainly been catching this year but wherever I get in I will be excited for it.”
Scott has started two games so far for the WooSox at first base and at catcher. His versatility is going to find ways to get himself into the lineup more times than not. His expanded versatility date all the way back to his days at Vanderbilt, where he won a national championship in 2019.
“Personally I had a lot of development at Vanderbilt.” Scott recalled. “I started as an outfielder and it was the beginnings to becoming a catcher. A lot of development as a person and as a baseball player. It made the transition pretty easy to here. Versatility has been a big part of my career and I look forward to developing as a catcher.”
