Stephen Scott off to solid start in Triple-A for WooSox
It has now been 20 days since Stephen Scott earned his promotion to Triple-A Worcester. Scott was promoted at a time when the WooSox were very short on guys due to injuries and call ups. He was inserted into the lineup right away on a daily basis and has not given the team any reason to take him out of it.
The Vanderbilt product was a 10th round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft by the Red Sox. Scott didn’t start playing catcher in the Red Sox organization until the 2021 season with Salem. He mostly played outfield until arriving in Greenville and making the switch to primarily catching.
Scott has been a welcome addition behind the plate in Worcester after Jorge Alfaro opted out and Caleb Hamilton got promoted. He has also seen time at first base to help move guys around to fill other spots that were open due to a couple of injuries.
His bat has also been a great addition to the WooSox lineup since coming up from Portland. Since joining the team on June 9th, Scott has been carrying a slash line of .250/.378/.536. He has 2 home runs and have driven in 12 RBIs in that span. The left-on-left matchups have not scared him at all either, as he has posted a .333/.400/1.178 against lefties so far in Triple-A. It is a limited sample size with only 10 plate appearances against left-handers, but the fact he has shown such a strong start is encouraging.
SoxProspects.com has Scott listed as the 35th best prospect and the 4th best catcher in the organization. They have this to say of his summation:
Profiles as a solid organizational player. Ceiling of a bat-first bench bat. Can play first base and corner outfield adequately and is now getting significant run at catcher. Type of player every organization needs. If he can get to even fringe-average defensively, prospects of reaching the major leagues drastically improve.
The top spot on the catching depth chart now belongs to Ronaldo Hernandez with Hamilton being up with the big club. Scott will have to keep proving his bat can play at the level and improve his defense as he will most likely get the majority of reps in Worcester next season.
