Opponents: Rockies, Yankees
Week record: 4-2
Overall Record: 37-35
Current spot in standings: 5th place in AL East
The week and the home stand started off as bad as you could get with losing back to back extra inning games to the Colorado Rockies.
The causes of these losses? Essentially what I have previously talked about and that is lifeless offense and bad defense. There were many chances for the Sox to break the game open in these losses but unable to deliver with runners in scoring position cost them.
The bright side of the losses however were a strong start from James Paxton and a two home run game from Rafael Devers.
The Sox were able to avoid the sweep in the series finale behind a huge 7th inning rally (5 runs scored) which was highlighted by a Rob Refsnyder two rbi triple. Also Whitlock continued to look solid as a starter.
After an off day the Sox welcomed in the New York Yankees who they have now seen twice in the span of a week.
The offense was amazing in game one behind stellar performances from Justin Turner (3/5 six rbis, two home runs, grandslam) and Masataka Yoshida (4/4 three rbis). The Sox ultimately won 15-5
After a rain out on Saturday, a day night doubleheader was in store on Fathers day and the Sox once again did not disappoint.
Game one was a bullpen game started off by Kaleb Ort and ultimately saw Chris Murphy, Nick Pivetta, and Chris Martin pitch.
The sox fell behind early but six runs in a three inning span was enough to see them get the 6-2 victory.
In the night cap of the doubleheader, the sox got a great glimpse of their future. Brayan Bello looked like an ace in the making (7 IP 1 ER) and Tristan Casas came up huge going 1/3 and getting a big two run double to extend the lead for good. Kenley Jansen came in for the save and closed out the 4-1 victory, sweeping not only the double header but the series as well. How is that for a fathers day gift Red Sox nation?
This week may have started off bad, but that can be quickly forgotten when you close out the week on a four game winning streak and sweep the Yankees.
This team still has some glaring issues, being able to consistently deliver with RISP and defense. But, despite these issues the Sox should see this week as a positive as once again Paxton and Bello were terrific and Casas continues to improve. Also, the bullpen continues to be rock solid.
The team will start a four game series against the Minnesota Twins tonight in Minnesota.
