Opponents: Athletics (A), Mets
Week Record: 3-3
Overall Record: 53-47
Current spot in standings: 4th place in AL East
The week started off strong after a 7-0 drubbing of the Oakland Athletics. The pitching was phenomenal in this one only allowing just one hit. This was spearheaded by Nick Pivetta who threw six innings and punched out 13 hitters, setting a franchise record out of the bullpen.
The next two games were not as glorious for the Sox, as they lost 3-0 and 6-5. In the 3-0 loss, Masataka Yoshida was the only bat to show up, while the defense was even worse, committing three errors in the game.
The 6-5 loss may have been even more frustrating, as the offense was almost non existent again and could have looked even worse if the A’s defense was not as bad. Also, the biggest surprise was that Brayan Bello was awful in this one, giving up six runs in just four innings.
This loss gave the series victory to Oakland, 2-1. Yes, you read that right, the Sox lost 2/3 to the worst team in baseball.
Going from playing the lowest payroll in baseball, the A’s, to the highest in all of baseball, the Mets, did not help with the positive thinking going into the weekend series.
Game one on Friday was delayed in the fourth due to rain and was to be finished the next day, which ultimately ended up in a 5-4 Mets win. Casas did end up having a multi-hit game in this one however.
in the second game of this make shift doubleheader, the Sox were able to win 8-6, despite almost trying to give the game at time. One being allowing a three run inside-the-park home run that should have just been a two-run single. As well, as forcing Kenley jansen into the game in the ninth despite entering the inning up by 5.
The offense did flex their muscles and hit five home runs in this one, starting off with a Jarren Duran leadoff home run off of Max Scherzer. Yu Chang and Justin Turner also got in on the fun, while Tristan Casas had his first signature moment, hitting a solo shot and a go ahead two-run home run in this one.
The Sox cruised to a victory in the series finale on Sunday, 6-1. The offense was solid from top to bottom, and it was a very successful bullpen day, giving the Sox a series win when they desperately needed it.
This week was a whirlwind of emotions that could have gotten away from the team very quickly, but were able to buckle down and get the job done.
Tristan Casas has continued his strong stretch and has even improved on it in the second half now, progressing right before our eyes.
The team will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow night, when they take on the best team in baseball, the Atlanta braves, in a two game series at Fenway Park.
