Star studded Portland Sea Dogs fall 0-2; Mayer, Anthony, Teel shine
The 2024 Portland Sea Dogs have been touted by many as potentially the best minor league team in the history of the Red Sox organization. While some individual performances have caught the eye of plenty, it hasn’t shown through in the win column. Following a shutout loss on Sunday, the lone game played from the opening series due to a massive snowstorm, the Sea Dogs lost a 9-8 shootout in Reading on Tuesday.
In Tuesday's loss, it was a near-opposite performance of the opener. The bats had no problem getting going, while the pitching struggled early to get outs. The top three in the lineup, Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kyle Teel, combined for six hits, two walks, five runs, and five RBI. Nick Yorke also made his first career start in left field, finishing the day with three hits and two RBI while also recording an outfield assist.
Starter Wikelman Gonzalez only pitched two innings while allowing three earned runs on two hits and five walks. A less than ideal start to the season for Gonzalez, as control has been an issue throughout the young pitcher’s career. Relief pitchers Robert Kwiatkowski, Jacob Webb, Wyatt Olds, and Brendan Cellucci all followed Gonzalez, combining for six innings and six earned runs.
A mixed bag of results to start the season for the Sea Dogs, they will look to get their first win of the season tonight as they continue their series in Reading against the Fightin’ Phils.
