In this new series here at Beyond The Monster, I will do a player profile on prospects within the Boston’s farm system. Mainly, it will highlight the top prospects, future ETA, but, it will also feature players that aren’t ranked inside the Red Sox top 30.
Today we will take a look at Brayan Bello, the fifth ranked prospect in the Red Sox farm according to MLB Pipeline and he is ranked as the fourth best prospect according to Sox Prospects.
In his last outing for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, Bello worked 5.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits. He did however walk four but managed to strike out eight. Of the 92 pitches he threw 55 were strikes and he worked a strikes 59.7 K % ratio and a 40.2 BB % ratio.
In his debut this season for Portland, he managed to strike out 10 over five innings over work. He did not allow a run on the four hits and only walked one.
He does have some filthy stuff as provided by Tyler Millikan and Eric Cross in the next two videos. He knows how to work his fastball, slider and change to get hitters off balance at the plate. According to Cross, his fastball was reaching 95, slider at 84, change at 89.
So far this year he has worked 20.2 innings with a 2.61 ERA and he’s struck out 32 batters he’s faced and only has eight walks. He has 13.9 strikeouts per every nine innings and has allowed only 5.7 hits per every nine innings. His walk ratio every nine innings sits at 3.5.
In his minor league career, over 64 games and 301 innings, he has 357 strikeouts and 87 walks. He’s only allowed 20 homers while on the bump. He is 21-17 with an overall ERA of 3.89.
The future is bright for Bello. But, it could be brighter for the Red Sox. As the Red Sox woes at the big league level continue, they may be in the mix for some pitching help.
If the Red Sox don’t want to make a trade then they could potentially promote Bello to Triple-A Worcester, allow him to work three-to-five games and promote him to the bigs.
His ETA is scheduled for late-July, early August, but if the woes continue for Boston, we could see Bello a lot sooner wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform.
