SoxSpects Portal: Nicholas Northcut Leading the Charge For Greenville
Nicholas Northcut on the radar.
Nicholas Northcut may not be ranked inside the Boston Red Sox Top 30, but he should be. The 22-year-old has devoured season stats for the Greenville Drive this year.
He leads the the club in home runs with 15 and in RBI with 32. He also has owns a .252 batting average and an OPS of .953 this season.
In the month of May, Northcut has hit eight home runs, four of which came in back-to-back games from May 4 to May 7. He also drove in 10 during that four game span.
In the month of April, Northcut hit seven home runs and produced 13 RBI. He hit home runs in back-to-back games on April 13 and 15 and then again on April 19 and 20. He had a scheduled off day on April 14.
The numbers are there for a promotion from High-A Greenville to Double-A Portland, but the call-up process could be a long one for Northcut.
In 2018 he was promoted from the GCL to the New York-Penn League to play for the Lowell Spinners. He did not receive anymore in-season promotions. He was promoted to the Salem Red Sox prior to the season start in 2021 and then again this year prior to the season start with Greenville.
In his minor league career he has 35 home runs and 156 RBI with a slash line of .240/.321/.445 with an OPS of .766.
If his stock hasn’t been promising enough for a promotion within the organization, don’t be surprised to see the club use this upgraded production from him as potential trade bait later in the year, if it comes down to that.
Truth be told though, if Boston was smart, they should not be willing to part ways with the young prospect just yet.
