Slumping Red Sox seek Game 2 split; Boston makes three pitching roster moves
Boston makes three roster moves ahead of Game 2; slumping Sox seek split with Jays
The Blue Jays took the afternoon portion of the doubleheader against the Red Sox, 4-1, on Monday from Fenway Park.
Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen made history in the game after being listed in the lineup for the Blue Jays and as the catcher for Boston. Jansen went 1-for-3 in the game; he singled in the fifth inning, which was one of only four hits by the Sox in the game.
"It was cool to experience that with (family) and have them there," Jansen told reporters postgame. "Once the game started, I just kind of locked in for the game and didn't think about it much. Took a moment to enjoy it before the game."
Jansen will give his jersey to the National Baseball Hall of Fame along with the lineup card from the game.
"I guess it hasn't fully hit me yet," Jansen added. "I'll tell you what, I was surprised when I found out I was the first one to do it. It's cool. Leaving a stamp on the game is interesting. It's strange. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have that."
Nick Pivetta pitched in relief for Kutter Crawford, who initially started the suspended game in June. He was sharp over the first five frames in the game, striking out five of the first seven batters he faced. Pivetta didn’t give up a hit until Daulton Varsho smoked a line drive to left field for a single in the fifth.
Upon alum George Springer sent a Pivetta 1-0 fastball into the Monster seats for his 18th blast of the season. Pivetta hurled six innings, allowing three runs and two earned on four hits while striking out 10 hitters.
Jarren Duran hit an opposite-field homer into the Monster for his 18th round-tripper this season.
The Red Sox will turn to Zack Kelly to open the second game Monday night versus the Blue Jays. Kelly has made two career appearances against Toronto in his career; he has a 6.99 ERA with two strikeouts and five hits, two of which were homers.
Boston made three roster moves after the game, activating right-handed reliever Justin Slaten off the injured list, optioning Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester, and adding left-handed reliever Bailey Horn as their 27th man.
Winckowski pitched the ninth inning in the first game, retiring all three batters he faced on groundouts. The righty has struggled this season, posting a 4.37 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with opposing hitters batting .275 against him in 59 2/3 innings (30 outings).
Slaten returns after missing 41 games on the injured list with right elbow inflammation. The 26-year-old has logged a 3.38 ERA, 1.03 WHIP in 42 2/3 innings in his rookie season.
Horn returns from the WooSox, owning a 6.48 ERA in 16 2/3 innings for the Red Sox this season.
