Should the Red Sox add Jorge Alfaro?
Jorge Alfaro has opted out of his contract, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The Red Sox have 48 hours to decide on whether or not to put him on the active roster. This raises the question of whether or not the Red Sox should add him on the 40-man and active 26-man roster or let him test free agency. Alfaro has been in AAA since the beginning of the season.
The 29 year-old catcher and corner infielder has been raking in AAA, slashing .320/.366/.520 with six HRs in 44 games. However, his defense at catcher is concerning, allowing six passed balls in 27 games at catcher. However, with catcher already a developing position for the Sox, he would probably slot in as a DH or first baseman.
If anyone has closely watched the Red Sox this season, they would know the right handed power has significantly lacked. Alfaro would bring that power to the right side. Who knows, he may become best friends with the Green Monster at Fenway Park.
As for the corresponding moves, Triston Casas has been struggling again at the plate. He was reportedly working with hitting coach Pete Fatse, and out of the lineup against a righty pitcher. One hypothetical is that the Sox send him down to AAA and have Alfaro and Turner platoon at first base.
Alfaro would still require a 40-man roster spot. It will be interesting to see if he decides to opt in or out. Other decisions are coming, with the likes of Christian Arroyo and Adam Duvall rehabbing in AAA Worcester, roster moves are inevitable.
