Should the Patriots pay Jakobi Meyers in free agency?
The Patriots key offensive free agent Jakobi Meyers is going to get paid this offseason. It remains to be seen if the Patriots will be the team to fork over the dough to Meyers.
The fifth-year pro from NC State could reportedly see a similar contract to Christian Kirk. The Jaguars wide receiver cashed in last offseason signing a four-year, $72 million deal with $37 million in guaranteed.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss thinks the Meyers will get a major payday.
“How a player’s market develops can often be unpredictable, and it takes only one team to blow it out of the water. But if Meyers ultimately lands a deal consistent with those of his ilk, he’ll be earning in the range of $15 million to $20 million per season,” Reiss wrote.
Meyers is Patriots quarterback Mac Jones favorite target on offense. The 26-year-old battled knee and shoulder injuries as well as a concussion.
Meyers appeared in 14 games last season. He caught 67 passes for 804 yards along with a career-high six touchdowns of his own.
The former undrafted receiver’s initial contract with the Patriots was three years, $1.76 million with a $10,000 signing bonus. He earned $3.98 million last season.
Meyers isn’t a traditional No.1 receiver and his production doesn’t warrant the payday he’ll be looking to earn. With roughly $34 million in cap space, the Patriots may look elsewhere at wide receiver and address other needs on the roster.
