Shohei Ohtani trade watch: Angels have recently ‘communicated’ with teams on the generational talent
The trade deadline is rapidly approaching and the biggest name on the market is Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani.
It’s been speculated for weeks whether or not the Angels would entertain trading Ohtani. The Angels run the risk of losing the Japanese star for nothing but a draft pick in free agency if he’s not moved by the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
The Angels have reportedly been listening to other teams on Ohtani.
“The Angels have communicated about Shohei Ohtani trade scenarios with other teams in recent days,” reported Jon Morosi of MLB Network. “Even as the Angels have won 6 of 8, the possibility of an Ohtani trade remains.”
The Angels are currently four games out of the final wild-card spot, Mike Trout is expected back soon, he is on the IL with a broken hamate bone. With the addition of Trout, the Angels could try and add to its roster and make a postseason run.
If the Angels dealt Ohtani, it would all but sink their hopes of a postseason run. The last time the Angels made the playoffs was back in 2014.
As of Monday, July 24th, Shohei leads the MLB in home runs (36), is 1st among qualified everyday hitters in wRC+ (184), is 3rd in RBI (77) and leads the AL in WAR (5.0), according to FanGraphs.
Ohtani is 8-5 with a 3.71 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 148 strike outs in 111 2/3 innings (19 starts).
The two-way phenom will be a free agent at the end of the season and will be the most sought after commodity in recent memory.
