The thought of any professional athlete being worth a $500 million dollar contract is mind-boggling. Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani may become Major League Baseball’s first player to come close to eclipse that massive payday.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Shohei Ohtani is poised to become the game’s first $500 million man next winter. That figure would dwarf Aaron Judge’s nine-year, $360 million deal he signed this winter.
The Angels two-way superstar is eligible to hit the open market next offseason. Heyman polled nine agents on what they thought Ohtani would earn in free agency.
Three of the nine agents said they think the Japanese star will land a $500 million deal or better.
The Angels would be foolish to let their phenom walk away. Los Angeles would be better suited to trade Ohtani but the club already has stated zero interest in doing that.
They’ll be numerous teams lining up for Ohtani if he hits the open market. The Yankees will always be a favorite, the Mets have the money and Steve Cohen has shown he will spend whatever it takes and the Dodgers are a dark house. Based off the way the Red Sox have done business as of late, it would seem highly unlikely Boston would be involved for Ohtani.
Ohtani is playing the 2023 season on a $30 million contract, which is the biggest contract handed out for an arbitration-eligible player.
