It turned out to be a career night for Boston Red Sox prospect Shane Drohan on Tuesday night for the Greenville Drive in the clubs 6-3 loss to Asheville.
The 23-year-old lefty entered play with only recording a max of nine strikeouts this year through only six innings of work on May 3. He came close to accomplishing nine strikeouts again on April 21 when he fell one strikeout shy, reaching eight, also on six innings of work.
However, things played out much different on Tuesday night.
The lefty not only entered the fifth inning with nine strikeouts, he also entered it with a no-hitter. After striking out the first two batters in the inning, he then allowed a solo home run to Asheville’s Cristian Gonzalez, his third of the year. Drohan quickly regained confidence and struck out the next batter and after five frames he had 12 strikeouts.
Although he did manage to collect two more strikeouts in the sixth inning, he did allow three more runs. He allowed an RBI single to Michael Sandle and then he gave up his second home run of the night to Colin Barber, a two-run shot, his seventh home run of the year.
Drohan was pulled after working five and two thirds where he was tagged with four runs, three of which were earned on four hits and finished with 14 strikeouts.
Drohan fell to 3-4 on the year with a 4.53 ERA and a total of 71 strikeouts in 53 and two thirds innings.
Drohan is scheduled to pitch again on June 14 against Hickory. First pitch is slated for 7:05 P.M.
