Shane Drohan added to the development list
The WooSox have added left-handed pitching prospect to the development list on Tuesday, the team announced.
Drohan has hit his workload for the season, tossing 123 innings between both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, reported The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
The Red Sox decided to shutdown Drohan versus make one more start before the minor league regular season comes to an end.
The 24-year-old rose quickly within the Sox system this season. He came out of the gate strong for the Sea Dogs, he posted a 5-0 record with a 1.32 ERA over 34 innings making six starts.
Drohan was promoted to the WooSox on May 15 after dominating Double-A.
“Shane’s just a really good example of the player development process. You get a kid out of college who probably hadn’t pitched as much as some others. Athletic. Room to add weight. Some arm strength, some arm speed. A good pitch mix, but really hadn’t thrown a ton, or really utilized his pitch mix a good. Really, just a good foundation for someone we could really help grow and help develop and educate him on what he does well, what he can continue to improve upon, what can be done in the short term and what can be done over a gradual process,” Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham said to The Athletic in April.
While with the WooSox this season, Drohan (5-7) posted 6.47 ERA in 21 games (19 starts) over 81 innings of work.
The 6-foot-3 southpaw offers a four-pitch mix, featuring a fastball that sits between 92-94 mph and tops out at 96 mph. He also operates with a cutter, which he added this offseason, 83 mph changeup and 75-89 mph curveball.
Abraham thought Drohan’s changeup made the biggest jump from 2022. He learned the changeup through long toss and the newly added cutter falls between his fastball and curveball.
