Scott Boras reportedly looking for massive payday for free agent left-hander Blake Snell
The free agent market continues to move along at a snails pace this winter. Only 36% of the eligible free agents have signed with teams leaving a massive portion still available on the market.
One of the remaining top free agent hurlers looking for a new home in 2024 is reigning National League Cy Young award winner Blake Snell.
MLB Trade Rumors predicted that Snell would land a seven-year, $200 million deal back on Nov. 6. Bill Maddon of New York Daily News reported that the southpaw is looking for a nine-year, $270 million deal.
The New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants have been linked to Snell at various points this winter. The Giants have been viewed as a favorite for Snell, but his asking price has forced them to look elsewhere.
San Francisco recently signed right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks to a four-year, $44 million pact on Jan. 12 and will convert the reliever to a starter this spring.
Snell reportedly reacted the Yankees’ rumored five-year, $150 million offer and pivoted to free agent right-hander Marcus Stroman. New York signed Stroman to a two year, $37 million deal on Jan. 11.
What’s the latest on Snell’s market?
Following the news of Hicks signing with the Giants, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported there’s still a market for the two-time Cy Young winner.
“While the market has been publicly quiet on Cy Young winner Blake Snell, behind the scenes he still has multiple contending teams who continue to express strong interest,” he said. “The free-agent market should start to pick up with spring training just 5 weeks away.”
The Los Angeles Angels are one team that’s remained connected to Scott Boras’ client. People within the industry view the Red Sox as a long shot to land Snell.
The longer the free agent market inches closer to spring training, the Red Sox may get a deal on a free agent like Snell.
It’s hard to see any team offering Snell the nine years and the $270 million. With spring training just five weeks away, will a team get desperate and over extend for Snell?
