Ryan Fitzgerald has been red hot for WooSox
When attending a game at Polar Park this summer, you might notice one player get a little louder ovation than the rest of his teammates. That would be for none other than Ryan Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald has been playing in Worcester since 2021, when he was called up mid-season after a good showing in Portland. Over the past couple of years, it seems the former Creighton Bluejay has embraced the Worcester community and can be seen doing events all throughout the year. That showing has undoubtedly made him a fan favorite, which is shown by the loud applause each game.
The 28-year-old is also giving the fans more to cheer about this year with his best start yet.
The 2022 season was a “down” season based off Fitzgerald’s previous success, as he would go on to put up his lowest batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS while in the Red Sox system.
In 2023, he is on pace for his career high in almost every offense stat.
Where to even start? Let’s dive into the hot streak of late.
Over the past week, Fitzgerald has put up a .429 batting average, an impressive .478 OBP, and an insane .762 slugging percentage. Five of his nine hits were for extra base hits in that span. Even when expanding it to the past 28 days, 13 or his 27 hits went for extra base hits.
Fitzgerald has had no trouble hitting lefties this year as his numbers against both arms are nearly identical.
It’s only been three games in June that have been played so that sample size is too small to judge, but Fitzgerald has put up better numbers as the months go by. 6 of his 8 home runs came in the month of May, and he doubled the number of total bases from April to May.
His only downside this season could be his home-road splits. He has only played two more games on the road and has double the number of hits. The WooSox are returning home this week after two straight weeks on the road. Let’s see if Fitzgerald can continue to swing that hot bat at Polar Park.
The WooSox have lost several important bats in the past week which makes Fitzgerald’s hot streak even that much more important. Jorge Alfaro was released, and Worcester placed Wilyer Abreu and David Hamilton on the IL. Fitzgerald found himself in the 3-hole on Sunday and should find himself there more this week.
