Ryan Fitzgerald excelled at the plate during the month of April for the WooSox
Fitzgerald was named the SoxProspects Player of the Month for April
Red Sox minor leaguer Ryan Fitzgerald has continued his blistering spring start into the regular season. Fitzgerald had a huge month for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox earning him the honors of SoxProspects Player of the Month for April.
Fitzgerald had a slash line of .306/.370/.694 to go with six doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 19 RBIs.
The 27-year-old continues to impress at the plate for the WooSox furthering his case that he should join the major league club. Fitzgerald is currently not on the Red Sox 40-man roster but if he continues to swing a hot stick at the plate, he’ll make it hard for Chaim Bloom to not call him up.
The former Creighton Blue Jay went undrafted back in 2016. He finished with a .253 average and a .692 OPS while in college. Fitzgerald went on to play independent ball and that’s where the Red Sox found him and inked him to a minor league deal in 2018.
He told WEEI back in March that he has started a new hitting style at the plate. Fitzgerald had focused being on a slap hitter but has moved away from that style with the help of two White Sox instructors.
“Going into 2020, I had worked on bat speed all offseason,” Fitzgerald said to the Press Herald last season. “I had done it going into the 2019 season as well. 2020 was phenomenal being able to train the way I do without having to worry about playing the next day. I really kind of focused on a lot of small things. You could burn yourself out pretty much every day if you don’t have to play the next day.”
He now focuses on generating bat speed and line drives. His approach garnered him massive attention from Red Sox fans during Spring Training.
“I want to hit a home run, every pitch, every count, every situation, I am trying to go yard every time,” Fitzgerald said during an appearance on In the Dugout Podcast.
