Roman Anthony ranked as AL American Rookie of the Year favorite by MLB executives
With the 2025 campaign quickly approaching, predictions are being made for what this season will hold. Earlier this week, MLB executives voted who they think will win the American League Rookie of the Year Award, and Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony came in first. After finishing last season in Triple-A, he is poised to take the majors by storm.
Entering the 2025 campaign, Anthony is ranked as the No. 3 prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com, and the top prospect in the Red Sox system. Since he was drafted, Anthony has been a human highlight reel due to his unique mix of speed and power.
In 119 games between two levels last season, the former second-round pick posted a .291 batting average and drove in 65 runs. He set career highs in stolen bases with 21 and home runs with 18. What stood out was his ability to thrive against more advanced pitching.
After posting a .269 batting average in Double-A, Anthony was promoted to Worcester on August 12th. The Florida native thrived being one call away from Boston as he posted a .344 batting average in 35 Triple-A games. With every game, excitement continued to build about what the future holds with Anthony in the majors.
While the expectations are high for Anthony, there is no obvious path for him to playing time at the moment. The Red Sox outfield consists of Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu, with Rob Refsnyder as a fourth option. That could change in the coming weeks as Abreu’s name has shown up in trade rumors.
Regardless of how the roster shakes out, Anthony does not have a lot left to prove in the minors. He was a force at the plate in Triple-A and has been successful at every level. Even if he doesn't start the season in the majors, he should be a prominent member of the lineup in the very near future, and MLB executives, like many in Boston, have high hopes for what he will accomplish.
