The market for Red Sox’ free agent Kyle Schwarber will be robust once the MLB lockout finally comes to an end. According to The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders, the Rockies are one of the teams to pursue Schwarber.
“I know that the Rockies are interested in Schwarber, but that doesn’t mean they will land him,” wrote Saunders.
“He could be a designated hitter, play left field, or fill in at first base for the Rockies. I know that the Rockies are interested in Schwarber, but that doesn’t mean they will land him,” added Saunders.
Schwarber elected to become a free agent after declining his 2022 mutual option for $11.5 million.
The free agent slugger has expressed in returning to Boston. Following the 5-0 loss to the Astros in Game 6 of the ALCS he said, “This is definitely a clubhouse that I could see myself wanting to stay in.”
“These guys are amazing. I said this, it’s two World Series teams going at it. This is a World Series clubhouse, and I would love to hopefully see if that opportunity comes back,” added Schwarber.
The Red Sox have a need for another power bat in their lineup after trading Hunter Renfroe to the Brewers hours before the lockout began. Boston has been connected to Japanese free agent outfielder Seiya Suzuki which could squeeze Schwarber out of the lineup.
This past season, Schwarber hit .266 with 32 home runs, 19 doubles and 71 RBIs in 113 games.
