Following stints with the Yankees, Twins, Rangers, and Rays, Rob Refsnyder has found a home in Boston. In his first season with the Red Sox last year, he set career highs in home runs, RBI, and games played. After a slow start to the 2023 campaign, he has been on fire at the plate over the last two weeks and provided a reminder of the impact he can make.
In his last 15 games, the former fifth-round pick is hitting .343 with ten runs batted. Refsnyder has 12 hits in 35 at-bats during that span, including four multi-hit games. Due to his recent performance at the plate, the Seoul native has seen his average rise over 50 points from .196 at the end of April to .258, entering play on Sunday.
As Refsnyder has broken out of his slump, he is thriving with runners in scoring position. The veteran outfielder is hitting over .300 in those situations. Less than two months into the season, Refsynder only needs seven more RBI to match his total from last season.
While the University of Arizona product has excelled with runners on base, he has terrorized lefthanded pitchers. Since the beginning of 2022, he is hitting over .300 against lefties, and that hasn’t changed over the last six weeks. That has allowed Alex Cora to alter his lineups when needed to put Refsnyder in the best position to be successful.
During his Red Sox tenure, Cora has gotten the best out of Refsnyder by maximizing his strengths. He has been used as a fourth outfielder and thrived in that role. Despite his rough start, the Red Sox believed Refsnyder’s bat would come around, and it has against playoff-caliber teams.
Although the season is far from over, Refsynder is locked in at the plate. In 16 at-bats this month, the 2012 draftee has posted a .438 batting average and added one stolen base to his resume. He will get plenty of opportunities to build on his recent success, and the Red Sox offense should receive a boost because of it.
