The Red Sox are looking for reliable arms to round out their bullpen. John Schreiber has been effective in a limited sample size with the club.
In four games this season, he’s posted a 0.00 ERA, yielding three hits, striking out three in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Schreiber was recently called up to replace left-hander Rich Hill who was placed on the COVID list.
Manager Alex Cora has already used Schreiber in a high leverage spot this past weekend. Mainly because Cora is running out of options of relievers he can trust in the bullpen.
Schreiber answered the bell against the White Sox in a one-run game in the eighth inning. The 28-year-old righty was able to get the job done.
If he’s able to stick around longer and getting meaningful outs, he could play a pivotal role in the bullpen moving forward.
Schreiber brings an unorthodox pitching style to the bump when he’s out there. He throws at a weird arm angle, this allows his 90-mph fastball to be more deceiving that it is.
Prior to his latest call up, Schreiber was utilized in Toronto and pitched well. He pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings last week. Again, small sample size but in each outing he’s been on the mound, he’s preformed for Cora.
This season with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, Schreiber has posted a 1.46 ERA, 0.973 WHIP, 15 strikeouts in seven games.
It’s likely the University of Northwestern Ohio graduate will return to the WooSox in the near future. Until then, he’s been productive in a bullpen that has lacked consistency. The Red Sox should ride out his unorthodox pitching style until he proves he can’t compete at the major league level.
