Report: Red Sox, Mets talked about Dom Smith availability
Red Sox need a first baseman, but Dom Smith?
According to a report made my Robert Murray of FanSided, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets have had conversations about the two clubs reaching a deal with Mets first baseman and outfielder Dominic Smith.
The report also states that the Chicago Cubs are also showing interest while the Mets are showing interest in Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Daniel Vogelbach.
Smith, 27, opened the year in a bench role that gave him limited playing time before he was optioned to Triple-A on May 31.
Smith will not find steady ground in the Queen City as long as Pete Alonso is healthy for the Mets. Thus, this make sense the club is looking for a possible trade partner.
The Sox going after a first baseman makes sense and Triston Casas is still recovering from his injury. Franchy Cordero hasn’t produced at the level that the Sox would have expected this go around in the majors and Bobby Dalbec has yet to carve his name into the lineup full-time.
Smith, who also is coming off of small tear in the labrum of his right shoulder during the 2021 season, has not been able to find his footing within the big leagues.
Smith, however, is a former first-round pick, as he went 11th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft.
With that being said, if the Red Sox want to go after a first baseman, then they need to set their eyes on Josh Bell of the Washington Nationals or CJ Cron of the Colorado Rockies.
Bell, 29, becomes a free agent after this season. Therefore, if the Red Sox wanted to make a move for him he wouldn’t come at an overly outrageous price like Juan Soto, who is expected to be packaged with a hefty amount prospects in an offer.
Cron, 32, plays in a ballpark where the balls do travel due to the elevation in Colorado. However, look at Trevor Story for instance. He came from Colorado and has found his power in Boston.
If the Red Sox had an opportunity to get either, the smart move would be to pursue Bell. He’s younger, probably most likely to resign with the Sox and will give you more defensively than Cron.
