Report: Red Sox are expected to call up outfielder Jarren Duran prior to the start of the White Sox series
Duran is hitting .397 this season for Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox are in last place sitting 8.5 games out of first place. As they head into a weekend series against the White Sox, Boston will call up outfielder Jarren Duran, per The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
The Red Sox offense has been in a downward spiral and is in need of a jolt at the plate. Duran will get a shot due to centerfielder Kiké Hernandez dealing with flu-like symptoms.
Earlier this week, Beyond the Monster looked at whether Duran could provide a much needed spark for the Red Sox struggling offense.
Duran has been swinging a hot bat at the plate for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox. On Thursday, the 25-year-old is hitting .397 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 15 games for the WooSox. In addition the speedy outfielder owns a .478 on-base percentage with a 1.116 OPS.
Duran didn’t impress at the big league level last season. As a rookie he spent 33 days in Boston, slashing .215/.241/.336 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 112 plate appearances.
The Red Sox will hope to get a spark to their lineup from Duran. He has been focusing on hitting line drives and utilizing his speed on the bath paths.
“Everything about him has undergone such transformative change over the last few years and by and large that’s really put him on the map to have a great chance to have a lengthy career,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said recently. “But it’s a lot more change than most guys experience. And so it shouldn’t be a surprise that even an athlete as gifted as he is is going through some adjustments, trying to find exactly the right way to take all of that change, to take the engine that he’s built and really harness it consistently.”
