Report: Free agent starter Mike Clevinger expressing interest in signing with the Red Sox
The Red Sox have already signed Lucas Giolito and are still searching for another arm or two for their rotation. One of Giolito’s former teammates with the White Sox has expressed interest in joining the new righty in Boston.
Free agent right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger has "made it clear that Boston is one of his preferred landing spots," according to WEEI's Rob Bradford.
Clevinger became a free agent this offseason after the White Sox declined his $10 million option for the 2024 season.
The 33-year-old pitched with the White Sox last season, making 24 starts, posting a 9-9 record with 110 strikeouts, 1.226 WHIP in 131 1/3 innings. Clevinger also tossed two complete games, one of those came against the Red Sox this past season.
In 152 career games, 138 starts, Clevinger has pitched for Cleveland, San Diego and Chicago owning a 3.45 ERA and 1.19 WHIP.
Last offseason, the righty was under investigation by Major League Baseball following alleged allegations of domestic violence. Back in March, following the leagues investigation, Clevinger would not face discipline under the league's joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.
Clevinger is no stranger to the injured list, he’s had nine stints dating back to April 2019 through last season. He had Tommy John surgery back in November 2020, effectively ending his 2021 season.
With Shōta Imanaga off the board, the free agent pool is dwindling down. The Red Sox could still turn to the upper part of the market and sign either National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery. Other veteran options such as James Paxton, Clayton Kershaw, Marcus Stroman and Hyun-Jin Ryu remain available.
