Reese McGuire has x-rays on right hand following game
Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire had x-rays on his right hand following the 5-4 loss to the Brewers on Saturday night.
McGuire’s right hand was hit by a foul tip in the ninth inning. He remained in the game because Boston had no other catchers.
The x-rays came back as negative following the game. McGuire has no broken bones in his right hand.
"It’s a little swollen, a little bruised. But I just got some X-rays and all is negative. That’s really good news. I had a smile on my face because it was kind of throbbing. I’m going to go get ice right after this and be ready for tomorrow,” said to reporters following the game.
McGuire pinch hit for Connor Wong in the seventh inning. If McGuire was unable to continue in the game, Red Sox manager Alex Cora wasn’t sure who’d be the emergency catcher.
The only player left on the Red Sox bench was Triston Casas.
“He didn’t fight it,” Cora said. “He was like, ‘(expletive) it, let’s go, we’ve got to go.’ It’s not perfect but this is the nature of everybody’s roster. There’s certain games you have to be aggressive to hit for them.”
McGuire thinks he’ll be ready to go on Sunday. If Boston needs to make a roster move due to McGuire’s injury, the club could call up Jorge Alfaro.
The WooSox are on the road playing the Lehigh Valley War Pigs.
