Red Sox want to bring the All-Star game back to Fenway Park, when 'ASAP'
The last time there was a Major League Baseball All-Star game in Boston was back in 1999. Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy meet with the media down in Florida on Tuesday morning and said the club is “lobbying hard” to bring the mid-summer classic back to Fenway Park.
"We are lobbying hard at the MLB level," Kennedy said. "We're finally coming up in the rotation at some point here. 1999 was amazing, that was an incredible night so we'd love to have the All-Star Game back."
Since the Red Sox hosted the 1999 All-Star game, the club has made upgrades to Fenway Park and have won four World Series championships. Fans are clamoring for the opportunity to see some of the game’s best players under the lights in Boston.
The 1999 All-Star game had many memorable moments, one featuring Ted Williams. The greatest hitter of all-time was honored as part of the All-Century Team.
In addition to Williams, Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez struck out five of the first six batters and earned the All-Star Game MVP.
The opportunity for fans to sit in the Green Monster seats for the Home Run Derby will be unforgettable. The last Home Run Derby at Fenway Park was won by Ken Griffey Jr., but Mark McGwire put on a show with dropping homers over Landsdowne Street.
