The trade deadline is rapidly approaching on Aug. 1 and the Red Sox haven’t committed to being buyers or sellers.
Boston will be getting back a bunch of their injured players in the coming weeks to help strengthen its roster. Even with the likes of Trevor Story, John Schreiber, Reese McGuire and eventually Chris Sale, Garrett Whitlock and Tanner Houck, the Sox are expected to be “measured buyers,” per ESPN’s Buster OIney.
“I think you’re gonna see the Red Sox be very measured buyers at the trade deadline,” Olney said on ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” on Sunday, ahead the series finale between the Red Sox and New York Mets.
“Maybe not necessarily big additions,” added Olney.
Story and McGuire will be with the WooSox beginning on Tuesday at Polar Park. Schreiber is expected to be activated prior to the Braves series on Tuesday.
Chris Sale continues to progress in his rehab and is expected to throw live batting practices after this weekend.
The Red Sox are expected to pursue a starting pitcher and would like to explore adding a left-handed hitting infielder, per The Athletic’s Jim Bowden.
“You got 30 clubs out there looking for pitching, it’s definitely something that’s on our radar,” said Bloom on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM radio.
Boston will need to deal with their crowded infield situation in the coming days as Pablo Reyes’ rehab assignment has come to an end. The Sox will have to activate Reyes by Tuesday or release him due to using all 20 days on his rehab assignment.
Kiké Hernández and Christian Arroyo could be DFA candidates if the club decides to activate Reyes. Arroyo might also require an IL stint after it was announced he is dealing with a jammed thumb suffered when playing the A’s.
If the Sox move on from Hernández, they could have a trade partner with one of his former teams.
The Dodgers are expected to pursue a right-handed hitter and Hernández’s name has come up as a possibility.
“Los Angeles also would consider a reunion with Enrique Hernández, a league source said, if he is willing to fit into the kind of niche role the Dodgers are seeking to fill,” The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya wrote on Sunday. “Hernández, who wants to be an everyday player, has spent the past three seasons in Boston but could be the odd man out this weekend in the Red Sox’s pending roster crunch.”
Hernández’s ability to play multiple positions will help any trade value he might hold. The Dodgers could look to use Hernández similar to when he was with them during their World Series run.

Trade or DFA Kiki. Trade Duvall. One thing about this article is that the author is depending on returning players too much. Some of those guys might not return before the Red Sox are out of it. If Bloom doesn't do anything then he deserves the unemployment line. They have some money to spend.
