Red Sox veteran outfielder may land on IL with right wrist injury (report)
The Red Sox have 12 games remaining on their schedule and sit 4.5 games out of the final American League wild-card spot. If the Red Sox are going to pull off a miracle and clinch a playoff spot, they’re likely to do it without Rob Refsnyder.
The outfielder was scratched prior to Friday night’s game against the Yankees in the Bronx with a sore right wrist. Refsnyder has carved himself out as a problem matchup for left-handed pitchers.
According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, the veteran may land on the injured list if he can’t play in the Sox’ upcoming series in Tampa Bay.
"Refsnyder is still dealing with the right wrist discomfort that caused him to be scratched from Friday's lineup," Cotillo said. "According to manager Alex Cora, Refsnyder could go on the injured list if he doesn't recover in time to play during the three-game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field that begins Tuesday."
Refsnyder has enjoyed a strong season at the plate; he’s seen a career-high 306 plate appearances while hitting 11 homers and driving in 40 RBI with an .833 OPS.
Refsnyder has hinted at retirement earlier this season; the Red Sox do hold a $2 million club option for the 2025 season.
Brayan Bello calls out Gerrit Cole
Red Sox manager Alex Cora called Yankees starter Gerrit Cole for plunking and intentionally walking Rafael Devers on Saturday afternoon.
Brayan Bello also took offense to Cole’s handling of Devers on Saturday.
“I feel like he showed a lot of weakness in that move,” Bello told reporters through translator Carlos Villoria Benitez.
Cole said that intentionally walking Devers was predetermined by the Yankees before the game. Devers has owned Cole at the plate in his career, posting a 13-for-39 (.333) with eight homers—the most he has against any opponent.
Hard-throwing Red Sox reliever flourishing since promotion
The Red Sox promoted hard-throwing Luis Guerrero in early Sept., and in a small sample size, the righty has been settling into his role down the stretch.
In four games, Guerrero has seven strikeouts to one walk while holding opponents to just three hits and one unearned run (0.00 ERA) over 4 1/3 innings.
Guerrero pitched 2 1/3 innings over the weekend in the Bronx with five strikeouts.
The 24-year-old has been dominating out of the bullpen for the WooSox. He has appeared in 42 games with a 3.31 ERA and has averaged 13.09 strikeouts per nine innings. He had allowed just one run in his previous 10 outings, dating back to Aug. 4. Over the course of his minor league career, he has a 2.93 ERA in 118 games.
“It’s a dream come true,” Guerrero said to reporters following his promotion. “I’m happy to be able to be here. It’s happiness all around, because I have a lot of family here that’s going to be able to come and watch me play. And for me, that’s very important. Also, I’m grateful for the opportunity that this organization has given me to play here for my childhood team.”
